Diplopia is an ocular defect where the person sees things in duplicate. This can be either permanently throughout the day or only at specific times of the same day or different days.
It is quite a serious problem because when it occurs suddenly, it is necessary to have a medical evaluation and to know the causes.
CAUSES
- advanced age: as the years go by the musculature also becomes more flaccid and this also includes the eye muscles. When losing elasticity, the eye can deviate and cause double vision because the eyes are no longer aligned.
- neural diseases: that affect the nervous system and cause double vision.
- Fatigue: in times of stress can cause double vision and fatigue that also affects the muscles of the eye.
- congenital strabismus: in which it is already considered an ocular deviation from birth.
- Medication: There are several mediations that cause intermittent or permanent double vision.
- Diseases such as diabetes or hypertension or keratoconus can cause double vision even if only during critical episodes of the disease.
SYMPTOMS
The following symptoms associated with double vision may appear:
- Seeing 2 images of a single object monocularly or binocularly. That is, a double object may be seen with one eye while the other eye is closed, or the double object may be seen while both eyes are open.
- Ocular fatigue
- Eye pain
.
TREATMENT
Diplopia can be treated in these ways:
- Strabismus causing double vision can be treated with prismatic glasses by an optometrist and correct only the double vision suffered by the patient.
- In cases where the deviation is very large, it can be treated with surgery to try to recover the direction of the deviated eye.
- Another option to treat double vision is to use a patch. There are patches that can be attached to the glasses and aesthetically it looks better, since if a person suffers from double vision due to one eye only the vision of that eye can be eliminated with the patch and thus avoid double vision.
