Dry eye syndrome is a disease of the ocular system that affects the entire anterior layer of the eye causing dryness and irritation. It is an eye problem caused by poor tear production in the eye. The glands that are responsible for generating tears to moisturize the front of the eye do not function properly. Another factor that causes dry eye is that the glands work well and generate sufficient quantity but the quality of the tear is not efficient so it comes off very easily causing dry eye.
CAUSES
Dry eye is a fairly common disease, there are cases of severe dry eye where the symptomatology is very uncomfortable and affects the daily routine life of the person and there are cases where it is not severe so the person may feel slight burning and itching and slight discomfort.
The main causes of dry eye can be several:
⦁ age, at older ages the body’s metabolism is slower so tear synthesis is also affected.
⦁ Eyelids too loose so the tear film is not stable and causes discomfort and all the sitnomas of dry eye.
⦁ environmental factor, in places or dry climates also affect the stability of the tear. even in the work environment if you work with air conditioning.
⦁ the use of screens. several studies already show that when we are concentrated blinking is less frequent, the fact of being in front of a screen concentrated, and the blue light from the screens are factors that affect the stability of the tear.
⦁ There are also several medications that have dry eyes as a side effect.
⦁ post eye surgery.
⦁ the use of contact lenses also affects tear stability causing dry eyes that can be improved with the use of artificial tears.
⦁ deficiency in the lipid layer of the tear so it loses stability and has a tendency to decay and produce excess tears and the eyes water constantly.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of dry eye include:
⦁ Itching and burning sensation in the eyes.
⦁ foreign body sensation
⦁ eye redness
⦁ In cases of severe dry eye may create blurred vision.
⦁ Photophobia: sensitivity to light.
TREATMENT
⦁ Help with the use of moisturizing drops and lubricating ointments that help restore the tear film and improve the symptoms of itching and redness of the eye.
⦁ Surgery in cases of severe dry eye.
If there are symptoms of dry eye, you should see an eye specialist to diagnose if you have dry eye using the necessary techniques to assess the quality of the tear that exists and the proper function of the glands that generate tears.
